ESPEC Certified with a B in the CDP Climate Change Survey and a B- in the CDP Water Security Survey
Feb 26, 2025
ESPEC CORP. (Head office: Kita-ku Osaka City, Representative Director and President: Satoshi Arata) received a B rating (the third highest among eight ratings) for climate change and a B- rating (the fourth highest among eight ratings) for water security in the FY2024 survey conducted by the CDP*1, an international non-profit organization that provides environmental disclosure system.
The survey assesses environmental initiatives related to climate change and water resources on a scale of 8 (A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D, and D-). ESPEC has been awarded a B rating in the area of climate change for the fifth consecutive year. In the area of water security, we earned a B- rating, representing a two-level improvement over last year's C rating.
ESPEC is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and is currently working toward a 60% reduction in SCOPE 1 and 2 (in-house) emissions and a 30% reduction in SCOPE 3 (indirect) emissions by FY2030 compared to FY2019. These goals have been certified by the international Science Based Targets (SBT) initiative*2 as science-based targets.
Initiatives toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions under SCOPE 1 and 2 include introducing renewable energy and installing energy-saving equipment at ESPEC offices. Under SCOPE 3, we are developing environmentally friendly products and services, such as launching new products in FY2024 that achieve significant energy savings and use low GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants. We are also promoting activities in cooperation with our suppliers, such as creating a supplier environmental contribution recognition program to recognize suppliers that have reduced their greenhouse gas emissions and suppliers who have received SBT certification.
Efforts toward preserving water resources include conducting water risk assessments, as well as reducing the amounts of water used in regular business activities, recycling water, treating wastewater, and correctly managing wastewater quality.
We will continue to work toward combatting climate change and preserving water resources going forward, as well as actively disclose information.
*1: The CDP is an international non-profit organization headquartered in London. The CDP works with more than 700 investors with more than 142 trillion USD in assets under management and urges companies and municipalities to disclose environmental information and to work toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting water resources, and conserving forests. In FY2024, approximately 24,800 companies--more than two-thirds of the world's market capitalization--disclosed environmental information through the CDP.
*2: SBT Initiative
An international initiative that encourages firms to set scientifically-grounded targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions so that the goals of the Paris Agreement may be achieved. Jointly managed by CDP, which is an NGO involved in environmental information disclosure, UNGC (United Nations Global Compact), WRI (World Resources Institute), and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). SBT requires reductions in supply chain emissions (the total of all emissions associated with business activities, not just the emissions produced by a business itself).
