Environmental Governance

Environmental Management System

The Company-Wide Environmental Management Committee was established in 1996. The ESPEC President is the Chair and the director in charge of environmental management is the Vice-Chair of this Committee for managing the companywide common environmental goals, holding discussions on various relevant matters, and other activities. The responsibilities of this committee include managing the company’s common environmental goals, holding discussions on various relevant matters, and other activities. The decisions made by this Committee are then applied in each company, business office and division where the environmental management activities are carried out. Important actions and policies that were discussed by the Company-Wide Environmental Management Committee are reported each quarter to the Board of Directors.

Acquisition of ISO 14001 Certification

After adopting environmental management in 1996 as a part of our business, we engaged in environmental management activities on a per-office basis and acquired ISO 14001 certification in an effort to continue strengthening our environmental governance. In FY 2017, integrated certification was acquired for three Group companies in Japan, with certifications added for ESPEC Test System Corporation, ESPEC Assist Corporation and ESPEC MIC Corporation. In FY 2021, integrated certification was acquired for five Group companies in Japan, with new certifications added for ESPEC THERMALTECH SYSTEM CORPORATION and ESPEC MANUFACTURING SERVICE CORP. Two overseas group companies also acquired certifications.

Environment Targets and Plan

Identifying Materiality (Important Issues) for Environmental Conservation

ESPEC aims for “environmental management that contributes to the achievement of a sustainable society through business activities,” and is working to identify materiality (important issues) based on this idea. First, environmental impact assessments are conducted to evaluate, identify, and extract issues regarding the degree of environmental impacts resulting from our business activities and the stage at which they occur. We also analyze external and internal issues, and organize the needs and expectations of stakeholders including the regions (governments) and local communities where our primary business sites are located, customers, suppliers, employees, and investors. We then work to ensure consistency between the resulting identified issues and our long-term vision, ESPEC Vision 2025, and incorporate the issues that are most important for environmental conservation into the Mid-Term Plan on the Environment.

FY 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets

ESPEC has set the following targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by FY2030.

This target received SBT (Science Based Targets) certification from the international SBT Initiative*.

* An international initiative that encourages firms to set scientifically-grounded targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions so that the goals of the Paris Agreement may be achieved. Jointly managed by CDP, which is an NGO involved in environmental information disclosure, UNGC (United Nations Global Compact), WRI (World Resources Institute), and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).

FY 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets

  • Scope 1+2 (own emissions): 60% reduction (compared to FY 2019 levels)
  • Scope 3 (indirect emissions): 30% reduction (compared to FY 2019 levels)

Result report for the 7th Mid-Term Plan on the Environment (FY2018〜FY2021)

The 7th Mid-Term Plan on the Environment established objectives for five themes: Providing Products and Services that Contribute to a Sustainable Society, Combatting Climate Change, Recycling, Control of Chemical Substances, and Conserving Biodiversity and Training Environmental Human Resources. We worked to further advance our environmental management through various means, including providing products and services to the low-carbon technology development field, developing and marketing environmentally friendly products, and reducing CO2 emissions.

Primary results

  • Release of systems containing low-GWP refrigerants: 222 models
  • Active introduction of energy savings and renewable energy to achieve an 86% reduction in CO2 emissions (SCOPE 1+2) at our offices in Japan (compared to FY 2018)
  • Shifting to 100% use of renewable energy at all offices in Japan (excepting some rental properties)
  • Reducing the increase in emissions resulting from expansion of manufacturing and global procurement by 27% (compared to FY 2017)
  • Achieving compliance with EU-RoHS in products for global markets
  • Carrying out biodiversity conservation through the environmental conservation business
Acquiring orders for consulting, construction, and maintenance of corporate office grounds or forests
  • Holding various events such as environmental education and local cooperative conservation activities

8th Mid-Term Plan on the Environment (FY 2022 to 2025)

The 8th Mid-Term Plan on the Environment includes increased efforts, particularly in combating global warming and conserving biodiversity, as a key theme. Major initiatives include replacing the refrigerants in our products with alternatives with low GWP (global warming potential) and developing energy-saving, environmentally friendly products. We will also promote biodiversity conservation activity through our environmental conservation business and the creation of the ESPEC 50 Year Forest in Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture.

Training Environmental Human Resources

Reorganization of Environmental Training System

We completed the reorganization of our department/job-type/responsibility based environmental training system in FY 2022 to improve the understanding of the Mid-Term Plan on the Environment and to train personnel who individually think about and act for the environment.

Incentives for Employees

●Environmental Awards

Organizations and individuals (including suppliers) who make particular contributions to environmental management or product environmental performance are recognized at an annual company-wide awards ceremony.

●Certification Test for Environmental Specialists (Eco Test)

Employees are encouraged to acquire the Eco Test certification in order to develop individuals who possess a wide range of knowledge and will address environmental problems. The pass rate is 100% for management positions and 84% for general employees. (As of March 31, 2023.)
